Message From God

I have to share this incredible experience with you because there is no doubt in my mind that it was a message from God. The other night I was feeling overwhelmed by some of the difficulties I must deal with as a missionary. I was looking up into the night sky, gazing at the half moon and bright stars, while I prayed that God would give me the strength to deal with the situations that have arisen. In the dark sky, a dove suddenly appeared and flew right above me, its white body reflecting the moonlight and the wind could be heard as its wings parted the sky. This was the first time I had seen a dove in Tactic and I knew that seeing it was a gift. While I watched the bird, three words entered my mind: Peace, Patience, and Promise. Peace for the anxiousness that has entered my mind, Patience to wait for God’s plan to unfold, and a Promise that God will take care of me regardless of what I may encounter.

Passing The Time

Being as there are a sufficient lack of outlets in which to be entertained (no television, computer games, Tim Hortons down the street) I have taken to reading. As a child I detested the thought of being cooped up in my room with my nose buried in a book, when there was a whole world of adventure outside. Why read about someone else’s adventures when I could experience plenty of my own?

As we all know the excitements of childlike discovery sometimes fades with an increased understanding of the world. We also discover that we do not necessarily have the means to travel to far off places, to climb the hills in Middle Earth, or to become stranded on a deserted island. Thus, our imaginations are relied upon to experience the impossible.

It all began when my father (practically having to force me to read) handed me a copy of A Wrinkle in Time, from that point on I enjoyed delving into creative minds of others. Though my shelves at home are lined with books just waiting to be cracked, as a university student I did not have the time to read anything other then Psychology books, and painfully dull Economics textbooks.

As I am now in the land void of many entertainment outlets, and do not desire to spend every spare moment creating lesson plans for my students, I have (as mentioned before) taken to reading. I recently finished The Count of Monte Cristo (unabridged version) which is by far the best fictional novel I have read in a very long time. The writing is elegant and takes the reader through a maze of interconnected characters and events. I will not say more, as I recommend you read this exciting adventure for yourself. I will say however, that I postponed finishing it for a long period of time as I did not want it to end. I find It is always sad to turn the last pages of a very enjoyable book.

Last night Amber gave me another book to read, called The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. I finished reading it the very next day (I couldn’t put it down). This book is actually the authors memoir, and relays her life experiences in the style of a novel. I was reminded once again of my own childhood adventures and sense of discovery. Of how exciting it was to come across an animal bone yard, to find our way through a wheat field that towered over our heads, and to explore the old barns on my aunties farm.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

New Baby

Zaak and Amber (a missionary family and friends from my church in St.Albert) invited me to be present at the arrival of their newest family member. I was a little hesitant at first as I have never witnessed a birth before (though I was very honoured by the invitation). I decided to join the family for this very exciting event an so on April 13th at 11:15pm I met the newest little Robichaud.

Prior to the birth, a few of the local ladies decided to plan a baby shower; Amber wasn't due until April 18th so the 13th seemed like a suitable date for the party. Apparently the baby didn't want to miss out on all the fun because she came that very day!

Throughout the baby shower Amber was having mild contractions, so we decided it would be a good idea to wrap it up early and left around 8:00. When I arrived home I quickly packed an over night bag (just in case Zaak called). Sure enough at around 10 I was back on my way to the Robichaud house; I was so excited and it felt like everything was going to quickly! Zaak and I were rushing around trying to boil water to heat the pool for the water birth (the shower is a Widowmaker and only exerts a small amount of hot water). Just as we finished warming up the water in the pool, Amber said it was time! The little girl (Acadia Juliette Robichaud) is so precious and is such a blessing!

Easter Celebrations

Easter in Guatemala is quite different than in Canada. The Easter bunny and his chocolate eggs apparently don’t live here. There is however, an entire week (Holy Week) of activities such as a parade where Jesus is carried in a coffin through the streets and Judas can be found hanging from various trees; It doesn’t exactly paint a warm picture like the Easter bunny does. Amber made the holiday more festive by inviting us over to paint eggs and have an egg hunt for the kids. They also joined me in an “egg cracking contest” which is a tradition I share with my family.

Insect Invasion pt. 2

The newest tenants to join my house are a group of flying ants, why they’ve chosen to live with me I’m not sure (the cockroaches must have invited them). The battle continues, who will prevail…their sneak attacks or my shoe? I know what your thinking, “My goodness doesn’t this girl have something more important to talk about than insects?” On the contrary, they are a very significant part of my day, I wake up in the morning and squish a few, before I go to bed I squash a few more; the war wages on.

The battle field!

The carnage

A giant mosquito whose decided to move in as well.

A cockroach the size of my pinkie finger!

As you can see in the first picture there is a very large gap between the floor and the bottom of the door which makes for a perfect entry way into my house! One moment..... "SPLAT"........ there goes another one. Stay tuned for more Mariah VS. Insects
